Ketambe Adventure - Mount Leuser is the highest mountain in Aceh province, Indonesia, at 3,466 meters (11,371 feet). The area around Gunung Leuser has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for Tropical Rainforests. Sumatra is a Hidden Paradise for Wild Sumatran Orangutans. Ketambe is a small, quiet, and remote village in southern Aceh. Ketambe is the official entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park, allowing visitors to see wild Sumatran orangutans, black-and-white gibbons, hornbills, Thomas's leaf monkeys, bird monkeys, and the exotic Rafflesia arnoldii, among other endemic Sumatran fauna and flora. It also boasts hundreds of large trees, clean, freshwater rivers, and hot springs deep within the dense tropical rainforest. It is a hidden paradise for wildlife lovers.

Ketambe is a small but charming village, a tourist attraction blessed with a wealth of rare Sumatran fauna and flora. Jungle Trekking in Ketambe explores the beauty of Sumatra's dense tropical rainforest. The best time to visit Ketambe is between June and October. This is the fruit season, when wild Sumatran orangutans, hornbills, Thomas's leaf monkeys, and other endemic Sumatran wildlife forage.

However, it's also possible to visit this area during other months, as the fruit season sometimes changes due to global warming. If you travel outside of the fruit season, you'll need to venture deeper into the forest to encounter wild Sumatran orangutans.
Because the Ketambe jungle trek is mostly uphill, with flowing rivers and a high chance of rain (we'll be entering the tropical rainforest of Sumatra), we highly recommend trekking poles, rubber boots, and a poncho (raincoat) in your daily pack.
There aren't as many mosquitoes as in the highlands, but there are occasional leeches. Remember, this is the BEST place to see wild Sumatran orangutans living freely in their natural habitat in Gunung Leuser National Park, where the famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio spent some of his busiest time visiting.
