Ketambe Adventure - Welcome to the earth, I agree that Southeast Aceh Regency, Southeast Aceh Regency is one of the regencies located in Aceh Province, Indonesia.

A unique tradition in Southeast Aceh

Aceh is famous for its cultural arts and religious community and has received a special regional title from the central government. The number of tribes who are here, making art, culture and customs are also diverse. The Acehnese are the largest tribe in Aceh. But apart from the Acehnese, other tribes who have inhabited Aceh since the first are also diverse, including the Gayo, Alas, Singkil, Pak Pak and others.

There are several cultural arts from Aceh that have been worldwide, such as the Saman Dance from Gayo land and others. The Gayo tribe in Gayo Lues district is also famous for its horse racing which is held every year.

In contrast to the Alas tribe, they use horses as a medium for their art and culture. The Alas tribe is the largest tribe in Southeast Aceh district. There are also well-known tourist sites, namely Gurah Ketambe tourism in the Gunung Leuser National Park environment. The lungs of the world is the nickname for Mount Leuser.

The Alas tribe is famous for the term pemamanan, which means uncle from the mother's side. Anyone who holds a circumcision or marriage ceremony, then they will invite his uncle (brother of his mother.

A group of people dressed in traditional Alas clothes crossed the road, from children to the elderly, men and women. They form a procession. Some of them ride horses. Others followed from the side and behind. They marched from one end of the street to the other, across public roads, past people's houses.

The term pemamanan cannot be separated from the word "uncle" which is a man from the mother's line—mother's brother or sister. This means that the people of Alas trust their uncle to be in charge of the apostle's circumcision party and the wedding party of each of their nephews. The dignity of each uncle is at stake for the success of the party.

Giving horse rides to family members of nephews is part of the funeral tradition. Uncle is the one who looks for / rents a horse to be used by the family's nephew. Apart from providing horse mounts, the uncle is also responsible for everything that is asked of his nephew's mother.

For example, Mrs. Seulanga has a son named Jeumpa. When Jeumpa was getting married, Mrs. Seulanga met Jeumpa's uncle. Jeumpa's uncle conveyed the plans for Jeumpa's wedding party. Not long after, at my uncle's house a simple feast was held to call the villagers. Uncle who conveyed the wishes of his nephew's family to the village community. In this tradition there is a process of collecting money from the village community as a sign of mutual cooperation and coexistence.

The collection of sincere funds from the village community was carried out by the uncle in a small celebration at the uncle's house. The uncle invited the villagers to consult at his house, then conveyed about his nephew who was going to hold a wedding party. At this time the village people will give sincere alakadar funds. Donations from the villagers can help—at least—lighten the uncle's burden a little.

If the burial is done in a luxurious way, the family cuts one or two oxen/buffaloes which are cooked in mutual cooperation with other dishes. On the seventh day of the funeral, the next event in the form of a procession riding a horse carrying a circumcision "bride" was held. Then the family group will come to the house of their mother's brother who gave the horse. The number of horses as gifts is adjusted to the agreement desired by the parents who have the celebration. And at night, the circumcision "bride" is then circumcised by the mantri. After that, the circumcised "bride" is put to sleep on a mat whose mosquito net is made from the traditional cloth of the Alas community. The mosquito net is in the living room with a rope tied above in the middle, which is used as a place to hang the traditional clothes that have been worn.

At first glance, the responsibility attributed to uncle will be a burden, both an economic burden and a moral burden. The burden for an uncle whose economy is middle to lower, it is possible that he will owe to Selingkar in order to grant the request of his niece's mother. This is where uncle's dignity is highly praised.

The economic burden goes hand in hand with the moral burden. An uncle who doesn't help out will not have his name written in the “family book” hosting the party. Whatever or whatever form the uncle's contribution will be recorded in the "family book". Here the morals of an uncle are at stake. Usually, there is no uncle who does not want to donate, considering that his name will be recorded in the “family book” and read out at the family meeting.

According to local people, the case of debts owed by uncles after the funeral ceremony has become commonplace since ancient times, since the funeral tradition began to exist in the Alas community. However, the form of uncle's gift has changed according to the demands of the times. In the past, no one asked for a refrigerator. An uncle only provides goats or cows. Now, the uncle sometimes also has to provide a refrigerator and even a motorbike, depending on what the married mother asks for. In short, uncles are the backbone of every nephew.

There is sweet potato, there is taro, there is for there is reply, that's how the Alas tradition regulates everything. In the wisdom of the Alas tribe, uncle is the most honored. If there is news that uncle is going to visit his nephew's house, the nephew's family is busy preparing all kinds of welcome for the uncle. All the contents of the kitchen, all the contents of the sack, all the contents of the house will be 'out' to welcome uncle. Uncle is more honored than uncle (father's younger brother). Of course this is a reciprocal form of protection.
